How has interdisciplinary education helped me in building my career?
I am Shobhna. When I
was pursuing my BA (Hons) in Journalism & Mass Comm, my senior advised me
to earn a minor degree in Foreign Language. Initially, I was reluctant as it
would have added six other subjects to the syllabus and increased my labour.
But on hearing the benefits of pursuing a minor degree, like increased chances
of getting hired, higher salary, increased chances of career advancement and
promotions, I decided to go for it. I learnt French during my graduation
years.
After the completion
of my course, I started working with a reputed news channel. Due to my minor
degree in French, I got a promotion and was posted to Luxembourg, where French
is one of the official languages. Because I could speak French, I easily
got acclimatized to the culture and environment of the new place. French helped
me in interacting with people and covering the stories that were not being represented
by the mass media. My degree in Journalism with minors in Foreign
Language, helped me to unlock the opportunities that might not have been
available if I had to depend on a translator.
Today I am a renowned
journalist, who has won several national and international awards. A huge
credit of my success goes to my senior, who advised me to go for
interdisciplinary education.
